Pablo identifies five macrotrends supporting the continued relevance of this approach to business management: increasing attention from executives and boards of directors to ESG risks; regulatory development and convergence; greater scrutiny of greenwashing; the growth of sustainable finance; and rising stakeholder expectations regarding the role of companies in addressing environmental and social challenges.

Beyond the evolution of the ESG terminology, the article argues that these trends reflect a broader transformation in how companies manage risks, respond to their stakeholders and contribute to addressing complex challenges.
