AI and law firms: new models for the future of legal services

April, 2026

Pablo Jiménez examines how artificial intelligence is reshaping client expectations, knowledge management, pricing models and talent development within law firms.

Following his participation as a panelist in the law firm management program organized by Fordham University School of Law and Mattos Filho, our partner Pablo Jiménez shares a series of reflections on the impact of artificial intelligence on law firm business models and operations.

Pablo examines how AI is raising client expectations regarding speed, quality and cost, while allowing legal professionals to devote more of their work to judgment, strategy and understanding clients’ business needs. He also identifies structural barriers to adoption, including incentives associated with billable hours, knowledge management and the need to develop processes that enable firms to share and scale capabilities across their organizations.

The publication also addresses decisions around building proprietary technology versus using third-party solutions, the importance of retaining control over data and institutional knowledge, the evolution toward alternative pricing models, and the development of lawyers who can use AI tools responsibly. Pablo further emphasizes the need to strengthen quality-control processes as these technologies increase output capacity.

From a longer-term perspective, he argues that AI will not simply make certain tasks more efficient, but will drive changes in how law firms structure their teams, manage knowledge, develop talent and define the value of legal services.
