Strategic partner or cost center? Levels of legal department management

April, 2024

In an article for LexLatin, Pablo Jiménez examines three levels of legal department maturity and how evolving objectives and performance indicators can bring the legal function closer to business strategy and value creation.

In the article “¿Socio estratégico o centro de costos? Los niveles de gestión de la dirección jurídica” (“Strategic partner or cost center? Levels of legal department management”), published by LexLatin, our partner Pablo Jiménez examines how legal departments can evolve from a primarily reactive function to a strategic role within organizations.

Pablo proposes three levels of maturity for assessing legal department management: the reactive operator, primarily focused on day-to-day legal needs; the proactive collaborator, which anticipates risks and works more closely with other business areas; and the strategic partner, which actively participates in planning and executing business priorities.

The article also discusses how key performance indicators (KPIs) evolve at each level and the importance of progressively aligning them with objectives such as process efficiency, risk mitigation, business growth, entry into new markets and value creation.
