New Labeling Standard for Non-Alcoholic Food and Beverages (NOM-051-SCFI/SSA1-2010)

Today, after months of dispute between the private sector and the federal government, the new Mexican Official Standard NOM-051-SCFI/SSA1-2010, General labeling specifications for prepackaged non-alcoholic food and beverages – Commercial and health information, was published in the Official Gazette of the Federation. It will enter into force in a staggered manner from October 1, 2020 through October 1, 2025.

This amendment requires that the current front-of-pack labeling be replaced with black-and-white seals or logos bearing the indications “Excess Calories,” “Excess Sugars,” “Excess Saturated Fats,” “Excess Trans Fats,” and “Excess Sodium,” as well as warnings such as “Contains Sweeteners, avoid in children” and “Contains caffeine, avoid in children.” These seals or logos must be included as of October 1, 2020, and their inclusion will be determined based on the amount of those nutrients per 100 grams or 100 milliliters of product. Under the NOM, the threshold amount of each nutrient used to determine whether the seal or logo applies will be gradually adjusted until the final threshold enters into force on October 1, 2025.
