The National Customs Agency of Mexico is created as a new authority in customs and tax matters

Yesterday, a decree issued by the President of the Republic was published in the Federal Official Gazette, creating the National Customs Agency of Mexico as a decentralized administrative body of the Ministry of Finance and Public Credit (SHCP) and independent from the Tax Administration Service (SAT).

For apparent national security reasons, it is intended that this new body assume the powers that the SAT currently holds in customs and inspection matters. The decree states that the National Customs Agency of Mexico will be assigned the challenge of “substantially raising the quality, efficiency and effectiveness of the multiple processes generated by the organization and management of customs and inspection services.” The implementation of this decree, including the commencement of operations of the National Customs Agency of Mexico, is not immediate but rather requires modifications and adjustments to various laws and regulations. In this regard, the SHCP has a period of 180 days to issue the draft Internal Regulations of the National Customs Agency of Mexico.
