The General Directorate of Standards (DGN) and the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (COFEPRIS) published on the website of the National Commission for Regulatory Improvement (CONAMER) the Draft “Agreement establishing the Criteria for the implementation, verification and oversight, as well as the conformity assessment of the Amendment to the Official Mexican Standard NOM-051-SCFI/SSA1-2010, General labeling specifications for food and beverages
The Implementation Agreement establishes that, as of October 1, 2020, the authority will verify at the point of sale that food products and non-alcoholic beverages comply with the warning seals and legends indicated in NOM-051-SCFI/SSA1-2010. This overlooks the complexity involved in modifying packaging and the inventory turnover of the affected companies. The DGN and COFEPRIS argue that the Draft Implementation Agreement does not represent greater expenses or obligations for private parties, and therefore they are requesting that it be exempted from the review process before CONAMER. In this regard, it is advisable to immediately submit comments in the review process in order to demonstrate the true impact that this change of criterion would generate for the industry.
