New minimum wages effective as of January 1, 2023

Today, the resolution of the Council of Representatives of the National Minimum Wage Commission (CONASAMI) setting the general and professional minimum wages that will be in effect as of January 1, 2023 was published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF).

In this regard, the new minimum wages are: • General minimum wage: $207.44 pesos per day. • Minimum wage for the Northern Border Free Zone: $312.41 pesos per day. As in previous years, and in order to reach the amounts indicated above, CONASAMI agreed on a wage increase of 20% for both zones, with respect to the general minimum wage composed of $15.72 pesos per day as an Independent Recovery Amount (MIR) plus a fixing increase of 10%, resulting in an amount of $207.44 pesos per day (current minimum wage ($172.87 pesos) + MIR ($15.72 pesos) + 10% = $207.44). For its part, for the Northern Border Free Zone a MIR of 23.67 pesos per day was agreed plus the fixing factor of 10% (current minimum wage ($260.34 pesos) + MIR ($23.67 pesos) + 10% = $312.41). It is important to highlight that the MIR should not be used as a benchmark for setting increases in the other wages in effect in the labor market; however, the professional minimum wages for trades, professions and special jobs will undergo an increase of 20% in both geographic areas. Likewise, it is important to mention that the 10% wage increase is above inflationary levels, which may directly impact the review/negotiation of collective bargaining agreements, so it will be necessary to review the terms of these in order to analyze the possible impacts.
