New minimum wages as of January 1, 2022

Today, the resolution of the Council of Representatives of the National Minimum Wage Commission (CONASAMI) setting the general and professional minimum wages that will be in effect as of January 1, 2022, was published in the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF).

As we indicated in our previous bulletin (to review it, click here), the new minimum wages are: • General minimum wage: $172.87 pesos per day. • Minimum wage for the Northern Border Free Zone: $260.34 pesos per day. As in previous years, and in order to reach the amounts indicated above, CONASAMI agreed on an increase of $16.90 pesos per day for the Independent Recovery Amount (MIR) plus an increase of 9%, resulting in an amount of $172.87 pesos per day (current minimum wage ($141.70 pesos) + MIR ($16.90 pesos) + 9% = $172.87). In turn, for the Northern Border Free Zone, an MIR of 25.45 pesos per day was agreed upon plus the fixing factor of 9% (current minimum wage ($213.39 pesos) + MIR ($25.45 pesos) + 9% = $260.34). It is important to note that the MIR should not be used as a reference to set increases in the other wages in effect in the labor market; however, the professional minimum wages for trades, professions, and special jobs will undergo an increase of 22% in both geographic areas. Likewise, it is important to mention that the 9% wage increase exceeds inflationary levels, which may have a direct impact on the review/negotiation of collective bargaining agreements, so it will be necessary to review their terms in order to analyze the possible impacts.
